Hodgkin’s Disease or Lymphoma is a malignant growth of cells in the lymph system that occurs in children and adults. It is diagnosed by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells, a cell specific to the disease. These cells are of B-cell lymphocyte origin, and overproduction of Interleukin-13 is related.
Hodgkin’s disease can start almost anywhere because lymphatic tissue is present in many parts of the body but often starts in lymph nodes in the upper part of the body like chest, neck, or under the arms. A pressure on important structures can be caused by Hodgkin’s disease that enlarges the lymphatic tissue.
Lymphoma, better known as Hodgkin’s Disease, is a condition characterized by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. In addition to Hodgkin’s, there are many other lymphoma diseases which are known as Non-Hodkin’s lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma incidences become more and more common with age, whereas Hodkin’s lymphoma is common between ages 16 and 35, and over 50.
Symptoms of Hodgkin’s disease :
# Fever and chills.
# Night sweats.
# Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin.
# Kids who have Hodgkin’s disease sometimes think they have the flu. They may have fevers, feel achy, or have swollen glands, which look and feel like bumps, often in the neck or groin area.
# Itchiness on the trunk of the body.
The treatment of this disease also includes some of the common modes of treatment used to treat other lymphomas. The most often used among these is chemotherapy, which involves administering powerful drugs that target the cells that cause the cancer. Another common type of treatment is radiation therapy, where a radiation beam is targeted at a localized area where there is a concentration of cancer cells. For advanced cases, a bone marrow transplant is done to bolster the body’s immune system.
The Ayurvedic treatment of Hodgkin’s disease is aimed at treating the presenting symptoms and improving the immune status of the body. Medicines used in this condition are: Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, and Punarnavadi-Gugulu. The herbal medicine Kanchnaar (Bauhinia variegata), forms the mainstay of treatment for this condition.
Once NHL is suspected, physicians make the person undergo a series of tests that are aimed at confirming if it is indeed NHL, and if so, more tests are done to determine the type of cell growth by examining the cancer cells. With NHL, it is very important to arrive at an exact diagnosis so that the most appropriate treatment can be employed to beat the cancer.
There are no known causes for development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma however medical experts believe that disorders in immune system and older age may increase your chance of having the disease. Research is going on all the time to try to find out other causes that led to the development of this disease.
Ocular lymphoma, also referred to as intraocular large cell lymphoma, is a subtype of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that primarily affects the central nervous system. The incidence of ocular lymphoma among the global population has known a pronounced decrease since 1960, although paradoxically it has slightly increased in the last few years.
